Last spring, we spoke about the trends we hoped to wear during our eventual re-emergence, and this year, the season’s best fashions will finally get a chance to see and be seen. It’s only a matter of time before those spring 2022 trends we saw back at last fall’s shows will be dressed on bodies that are out and about.
Patiently waiting for the collections to hit stores, it’s safe to say our editors have already figured out which trends they’re leaning into and which specific pieces they plan to invest in to make those looks a reality.
This spring, our editors are excited about trying new things and shopping twists on classic spring wear. We’re opting for Mary Janes over basic ballet flats and reimagined iterations of the traditional trench, leather jackets, and striped day dresses. But we’re not totally in unison; there is certainly a debate when it comes to hemlines, between the micro miniskirt and the maximum floor-length silhouette. Though there is one unexpected moment from the spring 2022 trends our editors seem to agree on this season, and that is including an early 2000s style cargo pant into their wardrobes.

We already know that minis and midriffs are going to be everywhere this summer, so I’ll play the contrarian and predict that fall 2022’s maxi lengths are going to start trending early. I would very much like to be the Saint Laurent woman in a ruched silk jersey dress with stacks of bangles on each arm, though I’d make an adjustment and try wearing flats.

I’ve always been into a slouchy tote bag, something that doesn’t feel too precious, that you can sling over your arm in the morning and not think too much about for the rest of the day. I love the ones that SC103 are making in particular; they’re all one-of-a-kind and have plenty of personality. I can see myself wearing this multi-color version of their shoulder bag all summer long. Knits of all varieties are on my wishlist too, whether it’s something more chunky and handmade feeling like this one by Molly Goddard that I can wear as a jacket, or the more second-skin (literally!) style sweater from Puppets and Puppets.

In one of the more surprising twists in my taste, I’m feeling trousers for spring and summer. As a lifelong skirt and dress devotee this is shocking—especially to me! But if anything could convince me to change my style, it’s the seriously tailored trousers from Kiko Kostadinov’s menswear collection, which are equal parts serious and funny. On the complete other end of the spectrum are Collina Strada’s lighthearted cargo jeans, which I would also like to wear from the beach to the office—in that order.

Mini skirts are clearly on everyone’s mind this spring (thank you, Miu Miu). I’ve been eyeing this one from Helmut Lang, especially now that it’s on sale. I like the idea of pairing it with the spring trend I return to year after year — stripes!

Loving that the Biker jacket has made its comeback but in various iterations. From slim-fitted leather jackets at Miu Miu and Acne, oversized and multiple zips at Prada to more funky styles at Simone Rocha and Richard Quinn, I’m excited to dust off my oversized vintage leather jacket and wear it before temperatures in New York warm up. I’m currently eyeing this slim-fitted leather biker jacket from Diesel for the upcoming summer months. Ideally, I will pair it with a white tank top, micro mini, and kitten heels!

While I patiently wait for the effortless white tanks from Prada and Bottega Veneta’s Fall 2022 collections, I love the idea of wearing the complete opposite for this spring and summer. Tunics and sleeveless tops with textured details like open weave and fishnet knits, frayed hems, and fringe seems like a fun way to style my collection of relaxed trousers for the warm weather ahead. I’m aiming for a balance of polish and ease with a seasonal hand made feel. Luckily I already scored a few similar styles on The Real Real!

I am all in with the 2000s cargo pant. The baggier, the better. It’s the perfect, easy pant to throw on during the weekend. I’ve been wearing mine with a dressier, collared button-up shirt and my go-to leather blazer. You could just wear it with a tee, and it would look just as cool.

Not only is it a timeless style, but a versatile one at that. Referencing this story from 2021, I said I was wearing headscarves non-stop for spring. A lot has changed but also a little. I’m still dedicated to headscarves. I was recently in Paris and wore them all about town with a trench coat. It looked très chic even if I do say so myself.
