At Glenbrook South High School, November will see both canned food drives and winter clothing drives ramp up to help needy students at the Glenview school and beyond.
Glenbrook South is sponsoring its “Lend a Hand, Give a Can” canned food drive taking place between Monday, Nov. 1 and Tuesday, Nov. 23 with funds and needed items to be donated to the Northfield Township Food Pantry, and Onward House in Chicago’s Belmont Cragin neighborhood.
With temperatures dipping below freezing last week for the first time this season, winter weather gear is needed by some students.
The GBS Titans Helping Titans club is organizing its annual winter clothing drive. New or gently used winter gear including jackets, hats, boots, scarves and gloves, in all sizes and styles for children and adults, can be dropped off at the school’s main entrance between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. from Monday, Nov. 15 through Tuesday, Nov. 23. Monetary donations are also accepted at the GBS Student Activities Office, with checks made out to “Titans Helping Titans At Glenbrook South.”
District officials said last year’s winter clothing drive saw 1,348 winter clothing items distributed to 71 families, 66% of whom receive financial support from Dist. 225. Last year’s winter clothing drive was so successful, the school was able to donate winter clothing items to Onward House, Trinity Services, and Family Focus-Family Network. The prior year, in the 2019-2020 school year, winter clothing donations also topped 1,000 items, helping 116 student families.
