Christian Dior first presented the renowned Bar Jacket over 70 years ago during his debut fashion show, where he unveiled the New Look. Since this date, the French fashion house has revisited the iconic piece time and time again, bringing new interpretations to the style, as well as marking it as a key piece in the label’s permanent collection.

The jacket is recognizable because of its cinched waist, soft shoulders, basques accentuating the shape of the hips, and open neckline, which, unlike much tailoring, exaggerates and celebrates feminine curves.

For the pre-fall 2021 collection, Dior has reinvented the jacket in celebration of the founding couturier’s muse Mizza Bricard.

“She was really fond of the leopard print,” Dior’s creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri explains in a new video, looking at how the design came to life. “The inspiration came from how Christian Dior reinterpreted this print back in 1955 using a very special fabric, chiné, that is obtained through a typically French technique carried out on silk.”

This unique craft consists of printing the warp threads before they are woven, thus enhancing the fabric with a heathered effect. After the fabrics are meticulously cut, shaped and assembled, this exceptional creation comes to life, complete with the ‘Christian Dior’ signature. Echoing the original style, even the buttons are covered in the delicate jacquard.
