CHANDLER, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) — A Chandler man is facing armed robbery and kidnapping charges after he allegedly held a beauty supply store employee at gunpoint earlier this month.
Court documents say that the armed robbery happened at a Sally Beauty Supply Store near Gilbert Road and Loop 202 San Tan freeway on Oct. 21. The suspect, now identified as 39-year-old Jose Angel Santillano, reportedly went inside the store, pulled out a handgun and said “you are now my hostage!”
Santillano took the most expensive items in the store and stole money from the registers, court paperwork revealed. Authorities say that, while inside, he had a walkie-talkie and he was possibly talking to a lookout. Before he left the store, Santillano allegedly took the employee’s driver’s license and told them that he would kill her family if he got arrested.
On Wednesday, Oct. 27, Chandler police were called out to a suspicious car with two people inside. Officers showed up to do a search of the car where they found several beauty supply products in new, original packaging along with Santillano. Police also found replica guns, the driver’s license that belonged to the employee, and two walkie-talkies.
The responding officer was unaware of the armed robbery that had happened in Gilbert, and only learned of the robbery after he had return the license to the victim. Soon after, police conducted a search warrant for Santillano where they found other evidence linking him to the crime scene.
Santillano faces a single count of armed robbery with deadly weapon and a kidnapping charges. Court paperwork says he has previous convictions including assault on a police officer, child abuse, DUI, and resisting arrest.
