Huron Plainsman | Extending beauty to all hair

HURON — When Shanda King, owner of King’s Beauty Supply at 357 Dakota Ave. S., is asked what her focus is for her business, she lays out a broad brush.

“We work with all hair,” King stated. “We can work with all nationalities, all hair textures, and I have stuff for men, too!”

King’s offers extensions and hair products currently, though Shanda says that she has the desire to eventually branch out further to add a barber and/or a stylist to expand the business.

“This has always been my passion,” King explained. “I’ve been doing hair since I was 13.”

King is originally from Pasadena, Calif., and states that her passion for finding products led to others in the community noticing her extensions and the products that she had found. Once the pandemic hit, she used her final paycheck to invest in hair and began working out of her home.

King states her extensions can meet all varieties of customers, in hair styles and in affordability. Her prices begin in the $70 range, while the top end can be more than $700, depending on the style of extension and the type of hair.

She also offers jewelry and hair accessories.

“We have the sunglasses with watches to match — different shapes and sizes,” King noted, with a laugh.

“We have the nose rings, tongue rings, toe rings, every kind of ring you can think of!” she added. “Every kind of thing that you can think of that you’d have to order, basically. If they’d want it, I want to have it here for them.”

Shanda is adamant that she wanted to be downtown versus opening her business in other locations around town. She expressed seeing the other stores opening recently and fitting into a new community in the downtown area.

“I had looked at this store a few months ago,” King explained. “It was still empty when I started looking. I wanted to stand out, and it had to be downtown for me. This space was only by God. I love the downtown area.”

King wants to stress that she is open for absolutely everyone and is excited to work with everyone in the community.

“Everyone is equally deserving to look as beautiful or handsome as they can,” King exclaimed. “There is something for everyone!”

King’s is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Monday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.
